Mimi: Weiss Family
I would like to hear from anyone who might have known the Weiss family of Ordarma, Hungary (Storoznitsa, Ukr.). They lived in Borsos Utco. The father's name was Moshe Weiss. Children were: Samuel, Jacob, Bernat, Joseph, Bashayu, Lena, and another girl. All of the children except Samuel immigrated to the United States in the early 20th Century, moving to Western Pennsylvania. Samuel's wife's name was Cecilia and they had two sons, whose names I do not know, and two daughters named Blanche and Sarah. The daughters also came to the U.S.

Mimi, don't know the family, just looked up Őrdarma, now in Ukraine and called Сторожниця. Until the late 1800s it was two places (Őr)-Darma and Őr(a.k.a. Eor, Jone, Jóra, Jovro, Javro), Jewish records were under Őr. Temple in Nagy-Kapos, today it's in Slovakia and called Vel'ké Kapušany/Nagykapos(H). Records in Ukraine are not available for research outside the country, in Slovakia although generally available, for some reason Vel'ké Kapušany/Nagykapos Jewish records are not listed at LDS/FHLC.

voyager: Re: Weiss Family
My grandfather Max Weiss was from Ordarma and emigrated to the Philadelphia area in 1901 with his brother Samuel and sister Sadie. His father had died and his mother Rosa had remarried Mendel Friedman.

Thanks to your posting, I am able for the first time to identify where Ordarma is.

Kezdi,
Thank you for your reply. The information was interesting. Perhaps the Jewish records will be available in the future or perhaps they were destroyed in the Holocaust.

Voyager:
Although Weiss was a common Hungarian name, I don't know how large Ordarma was, so perhaps there is a connection between our families. I'm not aware of it, however, and anyone from our family who might have known yours are no longer alive.
I'm glad you were able to locate Ordarma through the posting. It was very close to Ungvar which was the county seat, I think, of Ung. When we were in Hungary in 1985 no one knew where it was because it had been many years since it had been given to Russia and many years since its name was different.
Thanks for your reply.

voyager: Re: Weiss Family
My father said that there were Weiss relatives who lived in Collegeville, PA on a farm that they visited once. You mentioned you were in Western Pennsylvania so I don't know if that could be a connection. Given that Ordarma appears to be a small town, I wonder.

Mimi: Re: Weiss Family
Deborah,
I'm not familiar with Collegeville, PA but I will ask some of my much older cousins who lived all their lives in Western PA if they know the place and/or any other Weiss relatives I'm not aware of. Who knows, perhaps there is a connection.
Thanks for your posting.

Her wife's name was Rosalia Flesh. We do not know anyone else from Ordarma,

There must be an error in the way the e-mail address was typed on the Radix Forum. Would Dr. Marossi please send me his correct e-mail address. Thank you.

Voyagerdosmil: Re: Weiss Family
Did you visit Ungvar? Have you been to Ordarma (Storozhnitsa)? The US newspapers had an article about how much easier it is to cross the Ukrainian borders these days to visit Uzhgorod. It said Uzhgorod was a very pleasant, friendly place. Is it true that Ung (as in the river) means snake?

I would be interested if you took any photos while you were there to see what the city looks like.

Best regards, Deborah

Hello FRidrich!
Hátha ismerős a név...

blanche francetic: Toth
My Grandmother's name was Erzsabeth Toth. She married Jonas Prokop and it is my understanding they were both from Hluboka, Austria/Hungary. They settled in Western Pennsylvania and had 10 children. I am most interested in learning more about them. I do not know the parents names of my Grandmother. If anyone has any suggestions as to how I may do better research regarding them, I would be most grateful.

Chanady-Thorpe: Re: Ordarma, Marosi family
HI: My grandmother was born Erzsébet Vilma Marosi on June 12, 1903 in Ördarma, County of Ung, Hungary (now Storozhnitsa,Ukraine. Her father was a school principal and her mother Irma Vaáry a kindergarten teacher. My grandmother eventually married my grandfather Árpád Kálmán Csanády in Eger, moved to Budapest and then to Australia, where they died. I don't have many Marosi connections. Is Dr. Marosi Andrea perhaps related?

Kind regards, Liian Chanady (previously Csanády)
